Paul Sutherland founded the Utopia Foundation in 2007 with the team support of innovative and dedicated fellow board members.  We provide opportunities for people to express their good intentions in local and international communities. We invest in Champions that have the desire to create or are part of resilient projects that create sustainable improvements in the livelihoods of those in need.

Our Mission

Utopia Foundation's mission is to help create a world where communities thrive and every child goes to bed feeling nourished, loved, happy and hopeful about tomorrow.

How we got here

Following thoughtful discussions, the Board agreed the world did not need yet another new non-profit organization--there are already thousands in existence! Instead, we are dedicated to supporting existing program-oriented organizations that place a high priority on inclusiveness and collaboration, while prioritizing resilience and sustainability in their respective program outcomes.

Go to the people. Live with them, learn from them, love them. Start with what they know, build with what they have. But with the best leaders, when the work is done, the task accomplished, the people will say, ‘We have done this ourselves.’”
— Lao-Tzu, 700 B.C.

Utopia Foundation’s broad mission statement reflects our desire to operate responsive, flexible, and highly effective initiatives. Our focus on efficacy means that we engage in communities in many different ways:

  • We engage in both local and global responses

  • We engage in both immediate crisis response as well as enduring efforts such as early childhood development

  • We use both philanthropic approaches to assist those in the greatest need immediately as well as more entrepreneurial-minded approaches, such as micro-enterprise, to help others lift themselves permanently out of poverty

  • We support both programs operated by other non-profits as well as administer and run our own programs
