Al grew up on a farm near South Haven, Michigan . He received an undergraduate degree in Horticulture from Michigan State University and then served two years as an officer in the United States Army. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Michigan State University and obtained a graduate degree in accounting in 1958.

Al joined the staff of Ernst & Ernst in the Grand Rapids, Michigan office and in 1972 was transferred to the Akron, Ohio office. He served in the Akron office where he was the Partner in charge of the tax department until his retirement in 1990 when he moved to Traverse City, Michigan where he still lives.

Since retirement he has been active as a volunteer for various non-profit and charitable organizations, including:

  • A board member, officer and member of various committees of Child & Family Services of Northwest Michigan and the Child & Family Services Foundation.
  • A board member, officer and chair of the Finance Committee of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation.
  • A board member of the Rotary Club of Traverse City.
  • The Finance Committee of Rotary Charities and Rotary Camps & Services.
