Literacy Transformation

What’s your favorite book? Or your favorite character? Storyline? Do you like fiction or nonfiction? It’s likely you don’t have one answer to these questions. You probably have a few favorites or even a few favorite genres.

In many countries around the world, reading as a part of the educational experience is limited due to low literacy rates and lack of comprehension. But reading for fun? It just doesn’t exist.

Our core philosophy when it comes to reading is this: If we can inspire children to love books, then they will want to learn to read. Then, they can read to learn.

So, how can we begin to transform this relationship (or lack thereof) toward books? By getting books into children’s hands. Far and wide, to the schools in your backyard or to the schools in the most remote villages in Uganda, all children have a right to cultivate a love of books, a love of reading, so they can learn to understand the importance of their education.

No matter whether a person can read or not, the gift of a book, the opportunity to imagine a story solely based on pictures – even this can open doors.

Through the Outrageous Roadtrips For Literacy Transformation, Utopia Foundation strives to ignite the fire within every student to be curious and imaginative; to spark their creativity; to boost their self-esteem. By interacting with students and teachers in an engaging, personal and interactive way, getting everyone out of their comfort zones through reading activities or motivational teacher workshops, this transformation can take place. One book at a time.
