During times of horrible natural and man-made disasters, we are reminded of humanity's unity as organizations from around the world rush to provide emergency aid services.

At the Utopia Foundation, we applaud the selflessness of those doing the important work of meeting a region's immediate needs following a disaster. Unfortunately, often after a few days, life returns to normal for the rest of the world, the media spotlight shifts to other events, and the support for ongoing development efforts in these areas may be forgotten. The cycle repeats itself with a new disaster, leaving a network of short-term fixes that stabilize chaos and save lives but do little to provide sustainable, long-term solutions.  In essence, these nations' development efforts are loved for a short time with an outpouring of generosity, and then left behind as focus shifts elsewhere in the world following new disasters.
