$25 - Pave 13 Square Feet of the Leelanau Trail
The 15.5 mile Leelanau Trail is a non-motorized pathway that connects Traverse City and Suttons Bay, Michigan, creating the perfect setting for transportation, recreation and environmental education. The route stretches through hills, forests, orchards, meadows, and aquatic systems.
The trail is currently paved for 8.5 miles and unpaved (hard-packed dirt two-track) for 7 miles. TART Trails is currently seeking $500,000 to pave the remaining 7 miles of trail and match a $470,000 MDOT Transportation Enhancement grant. Project design and engineering are currently in progress and paving the last 7 miles of trail is scheduled for summer 2012.
A paved trail is usable by more people—from commuters, to those with physical limitations to families. It provides affordable recreational activities encouraging better fitness and health, and enhances "smart commuting," resulting in less congested car traffic. An improved trail encourages visitors to see the beauty of northern Michigan and to engage in a healthier lifestyle for a healthier community.
Your support helps complete the paving of this vital portion of northwest Michigan's TART trail system.
